The ParishThe parish of Kirton lies in central Nottinghamshire about 3 miles northeast of the small market town of Ollerton. Kirton sits on the A6075 road which connects Ollerton through to the A1 (Great North Road) at Tuxford. Kirton is something of a linear village with most properties built either side of the A6075 and stretching for well over a half mile along it. Kirton would have been a small agricultural village at the time of this transcript with a mixed farming economy in place. Modern developments in the form of railway lines did encroach upon the parish but most are now disused and Kirton never received a station. Kirton sits on the eastern banks of a small stream which drains northward into the nearby River Maun, the Maun, in turn, joins the Idle and then the Trent to reach the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Kirton is sited at around 40 metres above the sea and with land rising steadily to the northeast local heights reach a little over 100 metres to the northeast in gently undulating countryside. By Nottinghamshire standards Kirton parish was one of the smaller, covering just over 900 acres it would have supported a population of close to 250 parishioners. In Domesday times Kirton was shared between 4 landowners, the King, Roger de Bully, Gilbert de Ghent & Geoffrey Alselin, each share was only modest as collectively the assets amounted to 5 ploughs and a small meadow with the King's share described as "waste". |
