The ParishThe parish of Thrumpton lies in the extreme southwest of Nottinghamshire, indeed it forms not only part of the border with neighbouring Derbyshire but also a very small portion of the border with Leicestershire. Thrumpton lies roughly equidistant between the city of Nottingham (Thrumpton is 7 miles to the southwest) and the Leicestershire town of |Loughborough (Thrumpton is 7 miles north). Thrumpton sits on the southern banks of the River Trent which here forms the border with Derbyshire and is a mile west of the A453 road connecting Nottingham with the modern M1. Modern communications abound as the main London to Nottingham rail line passes through the west of the parish. Thrumpton is a small village most properties grouped around church and hall. At the time of this transcript most economic activity would have been governed by the estate of Thrumpton Hall, owned by the Pigot family, and would have involved largely pastoral farming albeit augmented by some river traffic of goods along the Trent. The Trent drains the parish eastwards and after a long journey reaches the North Sea through the Humber Estuary. Thrumpton is sited at around 30 metres above the sea on largely level plains, interrupted by low hills rising, on nearby Cottagers Hill to almost 100 metres. Thrumpton was a small parish in an area likewise of small parishes, it covered just 900 acres and would have supported population of around 150 parishioners. In Domesday times Thrumpton was shared three ways, Hugh of Grandmesnil, William Peveril & Roger de Bully having roughly equal share of the resources which only amounted to 5 ploughs and a couple of small meadows. |
