The ParishThe parish of meline is located in northeastern Pembrokeshire, roughly midway between it Irish Sea coast and the border with its neighbour Carmarthenshire. Meline is located about 8 miles southwest of the port of Cardigan, it is sited just north of the A487 road which connects Cardigan with Fishguard. There is no village to Meline, indeed the name "Meline" is not even shown on modern Ordnance Survey maps, just a scatter of farms and cottages. Meline parish consists of two distinct areas, the smaller northern portion contains fertile agricultural lands and pastoral farming with some arable predominated, the larger southern portion consisted of the northern slopes of the rather barren Preseli Mountains, an area of rough grassland and stony slopes where sheep would have predominated. The centre of Meline, by the church, was on slopes above the valley of the Nant Duad, a tributary of the Afon Nyfer through which it headed west to join the Irish Sea at Newport. Meline is sited at around 60 metres above the sea but parts of the parish topped out at well over 400 metres on the upper slopes of the Preselis. Meline parish, on account of the poor land quality covered an extensive area, around 4,000 acres, Preseli parishes are all rather large and it would have supported almost 500 parishioners. Like most of Wales Meline is not mentioned in Domesday Book as it did not cover the area. |
