Monington St Nicholas

The Parish

The parish of Monington lies in the extreme north of Pembrokeshire not too far from its border with neighbouring Cardiganshire. Monington is located roughly 3 miles southwest of the town & port of Cardigan and sits a couple of miles north of the B4582 road which connects Cardigan with Newport. Modern day Monington is a tiny place, little more than a name on the map with a handful of scattered farms. Known in Welsh as Eglwys Wythwr or "the church of eight men" (that being a reference to the number of freeholders) is has always been thus. Despite being in rolling countryside the soil quality is generally good so arable farming dominates the local economy. Pembrokeshire's coast is only a few miles west and a small, fast-flowing, stream drains Monington quickly to the sea arriving at Ceibwr Bay. Monington sits on a strongly sloping site, the stream being at 70 metres whilst the higher properties are at 140 metres, land rises stull further towards St Dogmaels reaching 205 metres at the local high spot. By Pembrokeshire standards Monington was a small parish, covering just over 1,000 acres it would have supported only a handful of folk above 100 parishioners. Like most of Wales Monington is not mentioned in Domesday Book which does not cover this area.

The Church

St Nicholas' church sits on the eastern side of a dead-end lane that runs southwards from that lane connecting Monington with Cardigan. Sadly this church would not be recognised by the parishioners married in this transcript. Their church was replaced by today's St Nicholas in 1860. A simple church of nave, chancel & western bellcote as befits the tiny congregation. Clearly of little architectural interest for Pevsner whose account is short and merely descriptive. The access lane is extremely narrow so it is somewhat of a relief to find a small car park in which to park and make a turn. A low, local stone, wall surrounds the churchyard which has metal gates for entry. The whole churchyard slopes steeply to the west with the church sunk into the ground at the eastern end, many trees surround making for a real challenge to the photographer.

No registers survive for this period, if any marriages occurred they have been lost to history
2 2nd October 1773 - 5th January 1809 Pembrokeshire Archives - Reference - HPR/138/1 Plain, unruled book, a continuation of the extant composite register in contravention of Hardwicke's segregation & wording requirements Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads A somewhat chaotic sequence and trying handwriting raise the distinct possibility of accidental omission and also a likelihood of a few misreads
3 10th June 1816 - 18th November 1833 Pembrokeshire Archives - Reference - HPR/138/2 Standard Rose style preprinted and prenumbered Marriage register Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur albeit few in number Whilst there are only 9 marriages the handwriting is sufficiently poor to warrant a slight caveat
