The ParishThe parish of Slebech lies in central southern Pembrokeshire, albeit because of the deep indentation of the Cleddau Estuary it forms part of Pembrokeshire highly fretted southern coast. Slebech is located about 4 miles east of the market town of Haverfordwest and sits astride the busy A40 road which links Haverfordwest onwards to Carmarthen. Slebech has no distinct village as such and is spread over a wide area either side of the A40 and down to the shores of the estuary. Much of the parish lies within the grounds of Slebech Park surrounding Slebech Hall. The 19th century history of Slebech is bound up with the eccentricities of its Latvian owner Baron de Rutzen who made extensive changes not only to the estate but also closed the mediaeval (perhaps Norman) church and had the present (and now closed) church built along the A40 then a new turnpike. The parish would largely have earned its living from pastoral farming at the time of this transcript. As a coastal, albeit estuarine, settlement only minor streams drained the parish into the nearby Cleddau. Slebech is sited between sea level and 90 metres above the sea, the present church building standing at 69 metres, in gently rolling countryside. Slebech parish was one of the larger in this part of Pembrokeshire, it covered over 4,400 acres and would have supported a population of just under 300 parishioners. Like most of Wales Slebech is not mentioned in Domesday Book as that tome did not cover this area. |
