The ParishThe parish of Egleton lies in western Rutland quite close to its border with neighbouring Leicestershire. Egleton lies about two miles southeast of Rutland's county town of Oakham, indeed it was once a chapelry of Oakham parish, and just east of the A6003 road which connects Oakham with Uppingham. Egleton is a small compact little village which once stood in rolling countryside and now stands on the edge of the vast reservoir of Rutland Water. Whilst this has robbed the parish of most of its pastures the area to the west and south is typical of the area before flooding, rolling countryside dominated by pastures with tall hedges, quintessential English Shire hunting countryside. Today Egleton is home to one of Rutland's attractions the Bird Watching Centre which allows views over the reservoir (famous for its Ospreys) and holds the annual UK Bird Fair. The small stream running through the village would have become the River Gwash before the reservoir and this flows eastwards to join the Welland just east of Stamford thence to the North Sea through the Wash. Egleton stands at around 90 metres above sea level with local heights of 150 metres to its southwest. Parishes in Rutland are rather small and Egleton would have been no exception, it covered barely 1,000 acres and supported a population of around 150 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Egleton in Domesday Book. |
