Glaston St Andrew

The Parish

The parish of Glaston sits in southern Rutland not too far from its border with neighbouring Northamptonshire. Glaston is located roughly 2 miles east of the small town of Uppingham and stands on and mostly north of the A47 road which links Peterborough with Leicester. Glaston is a small and compact village sat at a crossroads of lanes with the A47 most properties lie to the northeast of that junction gathered around the church. Like most villages in its small county Glaston would have been primarily an arable farming parish, little has changed today with cereals dominating the landscape. Modern developments came to the village with a plethora of railway lines, most now closed and disappeared, the exception is the line between Kettering and Nottingham, created by the Midland Railway, which passes through the parish mostly in a 1,800 yard tunnel, Glaston is not granted a station. Glaston is drained eastwards by a tributary of the River Chater which is soon joined at the Luffenhams before both meet the Welland at Ketton; the Welland passes through Fenland eventually reaching the North Sea through The Wash. Glaston is sited at around 120 metres above the sea, it stands on a hill hence the tunnel, but land west and within Uppingham rises still further reaching 145 metres in Uppingham and 161 metres in Ridlington in rolling countryside beloved by the hunting fraternity. Covering close to 1,000 acres Glaston parish was a small rural arable settlement supporting a population of around 250 parishioners. Domesday Glaston was little different, held by Countess Judith it mustered just 6 ploughs and small meadow.

The Church

St Andrew's church sits north of the A47 on a right-angled bend on Church Lane. The church is immediately revealed as unusual as it has a central tower but is devoid of transepts, a rather unusual arrangement. Obviously it was begun intending to become fully cruciform but for whatever reason transepts were never added. In line with its potentially cruciform design the earliest fabric is of the 12th century and Norman Romanesque in style. Both the central tower and the northern arcade survive intact from these early times even if the tower has been much modified since. The northern aisle shows lancet styled windows a nod to its 13th century Early English Gothic origins, the church's doorway and most of the southern face's windows date from the early 14th century showing the Decorated style of that time. The main change to the tower came in the late Perpendicular period, perhaps late 15th or more likely 16th century when today's topmost stage and the tiny broach spire were added. A typical Victorian restoration from 1862 to 1864 replaced most windows especially those on western and eastern ends as well as refreshing the remainder of the fabric. Church Lane has on-street parking mainly on its western side, the churchyard is entered by a lychgate right at the bend of the lane. The church is little too close to the southern edges to give adequate landscape views but most other aspects are available to the photographer.
