The ParishThe parish of Glazeley lies in southeastern Shropshire not too far from its border with neighbouring Worcestershire. Glazeley is located about 4 miles southwest of the market town of Bridgnorth and sits astride the B4363 that connects Bridgnorth with Cleobury Mortimer. The parish of Glazeley incorporated the equally small neighbouring parish of Deuxhill but both are little more than hamlets on this wandering B road. Glazeley is just a scatter of farms and cottages on the southern banks of the Borle Brook. The economy would have been underpinned by pastoral farming but there was a coal seam which whilst highly sulphureous was exploited. The Borle Brook drains the parish southeastwards and soon joins the River Severn before making its way to the sea via the Severn Estuary. Glazeley is sited at around 100 metres above the sea in undulating countryside, local heights reach to 170 metres within a mile. Glazeley parish was one of the smaller Shropshire parishes, it covered just over 600 acres and supported a population of less than 50 parishioners. In Domesday times Glazeley was held by one Reginald the sheriff and was equally small offering just 4 ploughs albeit with a mill, presumably on the Borle Brook. |
