The ParishThe parish of Meole Brace lies in central Shropshire roughly 2 miles south of the county town of Shrewsbury. Meole Brace sits on the former route of the A49 road which connects Shrewsbury through to Ludlow and Hereford. Whilst Meole Brace was once a distinct and separate village the modern expansion of Shrewsbury has engulfed the former village such that today it is a mere suburb. Whilst there is still a village feel around the church much of the parish is now dominated b modern developments including one of Shrewsbury's Park and Ride facilities and, indeed, Shrewsbury Town's soccer club ground. At the time of this transcript Meole Brace would have been a semi-rural parish engaged in a mixed farming regime with pastoral farming dominant. Modern developments have rather enclosed Meole Brace, twin rail lines flank the parish, one to Aberystwyth, the other through the Marches to Newport; in addition the Shrewsbury bypass of the A5 skirts the southern fringes. Meole Brace is drained northeastwards the short distance to the nearby Severn by the Rea Brook, the Severn heads first east and then south on a long journey to reach the sea through the Bristol Channel. Meole Brace is sited at around 60 metres above the sea in fairly gentle terrain where land rises to around 100 metres to the west. Meole Brace parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering just under 2,500 acres it would have supported a population of close to 1,200 parishioners. In Domesday times Meole Brace was shared by the Canons of St Mary, Shrewsbury and Ralph Mortimer with the latter having the few documented assets of 3 ploughs and a mill. |
