The ParishThe parish of Uffington lies in central Shropshire just east (about 2 miles) of the county capital city of Shrewsbury. Uffington lies on a bend on the River Severn, one of Great Britain's great rivers, just east of the busy A49 road which bypasses Shrewsbury to the east. The village lies on a north-south running lane parallel to the course of the River Severn; the parish is at about 50 metres above sea level despite the great run of the river to its exit into the Bristol Channel. The parish consisted of a core based upon the village plus an area known as Haughton Demesne, a quasi extra parochial area. The area was traditionally pastoral farming with cattle on the flood plain of the river, however there was also some mining and quarrying in the parish. The parish covered just over 1,000 acres and supported around 150 parishioners. Uffington has a long history where it features in Domesday Book supporting no fewer than 12 ploughs. |
