The ParishThe parish of Welshampton lies in the extreme north of Shropshire, indeed it forms part of the border with the detached portion of neighboring Flintshire. Welshampton is a small and compact village sitting of the A495 road about 3 miles east of the market town of Ellesmere, the A495 road connects onwards to Whitchurch. Much of Welshampton is built either along the A495 or on short side roads which lead off it to both north & south. The area, at the time of this transcript, would have largely been devoted to pastoral farming which would have formed the main income of the area. Welshampton is situated in a rolling countryside dominated by glacial deposits which have left behind the "meres" which make the area a rather attractive one, especially given the incidence of woodland throughout. A brief prosperity would have come to the area when the Ellesmere branch of the Shropshire Union Canal was built through Welshampton parish. The principal drainage of the parish is a collection of small brooks that eventually merge to form the River Rodden and flow southeastwards to eventually join the Severn and thus reach the Irish Sea through the Bristol Channel. Welshampton is sited at around 90 metres above sea level and local heights are only 40 metres or so above that level. In Domesday times Welshampton was held by on Reginald the Sheriff and was small place indeed offering just 3 ploughs. |
