The ParishThe parish of Ansford lies in southeastern Somerset, the village is a northern extension of the larger settlement of Castle Cary. The parish is roughly 5 miles northwest of the market town of Wincanton and sited on the A371 road which links Wincanton to Shepton Mallet. The village is around 90 metres above sea level on a shelf above the valley of the River Brue. It is likely that the joint settlements grew up to serve the crossing point of the Brue. Ansford is very much the junior partner of this settlement, just a population of 300 parishioners (Castle Cary maybe 7 times that value). The area traditionally was mixed agriculture, pastoral in the valley and arable on the hills. Despite its relatively small size Ansford has been around for a long time, it merits a mention in Domesday Book where it reputedly supported 6 ploughs and a mill. |
