The ParishThe parish of Bradford on Tone lies in southwestern Somerset not too far from its borer with neighbouring Devon. Bradford on Tone is located about 4 miles west of the county town of Taunton and sits just a half mile north of the A38 road which connects Taunton through Wellington and onward to Exeter. As its name suggests Bradford on Tone sits on the banks of the River Tone, where it forms a medium sized village on the southern bank. Whilst Bradford on Tone's economy would have been underpinned by pastoral farming, there was some quarrying of the local stone for building. The Tone drains the parish northeastward, through Taunton and reaches the Bristol Channel through the port of Bridgwater. Bradford on Tone is sited at around 40 metres above the sea in gently rolling countryside where local heights rise to almost 100 metres on nearby Lipe Hill. Bradford on Tone parish was fairly typically sized for its area, it covered just over 1,700 acres and would have supported a population of around 550 parishioners. In Domesday times Bradford on Tone was one of the many holdings of Count Robert of Mortain, a relatively small place of 8 ploughs, small meadows, pastures & woodland but there was a mill on the Tone. |
