The ParishThe parish of Closworth lies in the extreme southeast of Somerset forming a stretch of the border with neighbouring Dorset. Closworth is located roughly 4 miles south of the large market town of Yeovil and sits about a half mile west of the A37 road which connects Yeovil with Dorchester. Closworth is a tiny place, little more than a hamlet with no village facilities as such. The main area of settlement can be found around church and Manor Farm on a ridge of land and accessed by a narrow lane from the A37. Like most parishes in this area a mixed farming regime would have been in place dominated by dairy farming, some small scale extraction of the local stone for building took place too. Closworth is drained northwards by the infant River Yeo, close by it is dammed to create Sutton Bingham Reservoir, the Yeo heads northwards, meeting the Parrett at Langport and the outer Bristol Channel through the port of Bridgwater. Closworth is sited at around 90 metres above the sea with land dropping away on all sides except to the southwest where the ridge steadily to 136 metres at nearby Clarkham Cross. Somerset parishes are often small and Closworth was no exception, covering just under 1,100 acres it would have supported a population of about 150 parishioners. In Domesday times Closworth was an equally modest place, a holding of the ubiquitous Count Robert of Mortain it offered 6 ploughs, the usual meadows & woodland but did possess a mill. |

Standard preprinted and self-numbered Marriage register
with 4 entries per page, the register continues as an unruled book
after the first few pages. |
Grade 3 Register - there are sufficient quality issues
with this register to indicate that some misreads will occur
albeit few in number |
The early part of this register suffers badly from
bleed-through of backing entries making for a challenging read and
the possibility of a few misreads |
