Edington St George

The Parish

The parish of Edington is located in north central Somerset. Edington is located about 6 miles east of the port and market town of Bridgwater. Edington is a compact village, one of a string that sits on the edge of the Somerset levels and about a mile north of the A39 road which connects Bridgwater with Glastonbury. Today Edington almost is contiguous with the neighbouring villages of Chilton Polden & Catcott. At the time of this transcript Edington would have been dominated by pastoral farming and this is still in evidence today although cider orchards were a notable local sideline. The drainage of the parish is largely made by the hand of man, with drains running northwards to reach the main South Drain and the Bristol Channel through the River Parrett. Edington is sited at around 30 metres above the sea on a low ridge of land that trends east to west across the levels. Edington parish is small for a Somerset parish covering just over 1,900 acres it supported a population of just over 400 parishioners. Edington is not separately enumerated in Domesday Book.

The Church

St George's church sits at the heart of Edington village on the northern side of Church Road. Regrettably the building is a Victorian replacement built in 1879. The building is clearly of little architectural merit as Pevsner dismisses it in a few lines mentioning only the Norman font which is perhaps indicative of the age of its predecessor. The church sits behind a waist-height local stone wall and a pair of metal gates grants access. The site is enclosed and has many trees which restrict photographic angles.
