The ParishThe parish of Edington is located in north central Somerset. Edington is located about 6 miles east of the port and market town of Bridgwater. Edington is a compact village, one of a string that sits on the edge of the Somerset levels and about a mile north of the A39 road which connects Bridgwater with Glastonbury. Today Edington almost is contiguous with the neighbouring villages of Chilton Polden & Catcott. At the time of this transcript Edington would have been dominated by pastoral farming and this is still in evidence today although cider orchards were a notable local sideline. The drainage of the parish is largely made by the hand of man, with drains running northwards to reach the main South Drain and the Bristol Channel through the River Parrett. Edington is sited at around 30 metres above the sea on a low ridge of land that trends east to west across the levels. Edington parish is small for a Somerset parish covering just over 1,900 acres it supported a population of just over 400 parishioners. Edington is not separately enumerated in Domesday Book. |

1 | 8th May 1754 - 10th August 1769 | Somerset Heritage Centre - Reference - D/P/ed/2/1/2 | Plain, unruled book, a continuation of the extant composite register in contravention of Hardwicke's segregation & wording requirements | Grade 4 Register - there are notable quality issues with this register which may have resulted in many misreads | The register suffers from fading and also the Marriages are not segregated from other events making for a likelihood of misread and/or omission |
1770 - 1837 | Edington was not licensed for marriages during this period and there are no further registers. |
