The ParishThe parish of Heathfield lies in western Somerset about 5 miles west of the county town of Taunton. There is not much to Heathfield, merely a collection of farms and cottages sitting just off the B3227 road which connects Taunton with Wiveliscombe. This area is dominated by pastoral farming in small hedged fields and is crisscrossed with narrow lanes. Heathfield would have earned its living from mainly cattle rearing. Heathfield parish is drained by the Halse Brook, a tributary of the River Tone which flows eastwards, joins the Tone at Taunton & reaches the Bristol Channel through the port of Bridgwater. Heathfield is sited at around 60 metres above the sea on a low ridge and is surrounded by gently rolling countryside rising to the north onto Exmoor. Somerset is characterised by small parishes and Heathfield is one of the smaller, at less than 700 acres it would have supported just under 150 parishioners. In Domesday times Heathfield was equally small, held by one William of Mohun it offered just 2 ploughs as well as small meadows, pastures & woodland, it did, however, possess a mill. |
