The ParishThe parish of Langport lies in central Somerset about 11 miles east of the county town of Taunton. Langport is a small market town which stands on the banks of the River Parrett just at its confluence with the Yeo and marking the crossing point of the busy A378 road running thence to Taunton. Langport was originally an urban chapelry of Huish Episcopi parish but was always a church where marriages were performed. Much of Langport stands alongside or just to either side of the A379 which runs in a northeast to southwest direction along a meander of the river leading to the crossing point at the curve in the bend. At the time of this transcript the river was navigable and Langport, as its name suggests made a living from port facilities. As a local market centre it would also have provided market services to the local area, the market being granted in the 16th century. Langport had its moment in the limelight during the English Civil War when it was repeatedly fought over, a tribute to the importance of its river crossing. The Parrett heads westwards from the town to reach the Bristol Channel through Bridgwater. Langport is sited mostly around 10 metres above sea level although the church stands on a little knoll at 21 metres. Langport parish was purely covering the town and as such covered under 200 acres. It, however, supported a population of almost 1,200 parishioners. In Domesday times Langport was a Royal Burgh held directly by King William the taxation was not assessed but 49 ploughs and 2 fisheries were recorded. |
