The ParishThe parish of Marston Bigot (we follow the Ordnance Survey spelling it is sometimes rendered as "Bigott") lies in the extreme east of Somerset, indeed it forms a small part of the border with neighbouring Wiltshire. Marston Bigot is located about 3 miles southwest of the market town of Frome. Marston Bigot is little more than a hamlet, today; sitting just south of the A361 road which connects Frome with Shepton Mallet. The landscape around the parish has been much modified by the local lords (Earls of Cork & Orrery) who laid out the estate of Marston House and even removed the site of the original village. At the time of this transcript the economy would have been bound up with the activities of the estate, mainly farming but with the usual game interests of the landed gentry. Marston Bigot is drained by a small tributary of the River Frome, again landscaped through the parkland) which is shortly joined heading north to reach the Avon near Bradford on Avon and thence to the Bristol Channel through the Avon Gorge. Marston Bigot is sited on a sloping stretch of ground, the A351 being at 130 metres and the church at just 90; the landscape rolls gently to local heights of almost 200 metres on nearby Cloford Common. Marston Bigot parish was quite large by Somerset standards, it covered around 2,000 acres and would have supported a population of around 500 parishioners. In Domesday time Marston Bigot was held by one Roger Arundel and could offer 6 ploughs, small meadows, pasture & woodland but did possess a mill. |
