The ParishThe parish of Pitminster lies in southwestern Somerset, indeed it forms a stretch of the border with neighbouring Devon. Pitminster is located about 4 miles south of the market town of Taunton. Pitminster is a small and compact village nestling underneath the northern slopes of the Blackdown Hills. Pitminster sits a mile west of the B3170 road which leads southward from Taunton towards Honiton. At the time of this transcript, and indeed still today, the local economy is dominated by a mixture of pastoral farming and cider orchards. The nearby Blackdown Hills were also extensively quarried for the local flint as a building stone employing some people. Pitminster is drained by a series of small brooks heading northwards to join the Tone at Taunton thence heading northeast and north via the Parrett to the Bristol Channel through the port of Bridgwater. Pitminster is sited at around 80 metres above the sea but the escarpment of the Blackdown Hills rises sharply to reach local heights in excess of 300 metres close by. Pitminster parish was one of the larger in this area, it covered just over 5,100 acres, albeit 1,100 were described as waste and supported a population of around 1,500 parishioners. In Domesday times Pitminster was held by the Bishop of Winchester, it could offer 16 ploughs extensive pastures and woodlands together with a mill. |
