The ParishThe parish of East Quantoxhead is located on the north coast (Bristol Channel) of western Somerset. As its name implies it stands at the northern end of the Quantock Hills where they meet the sea. East Quantoxhead is located just to the north of the A39 road which links Bridgwater (and about 13 miles from there) to Minehead down a narrow lane which ends at the village. East Quantoxhead is a relatively small settlement most buildings being located either along that small lane or its branch to the west. East Quantoxhead is sited on a narrow coastal plain at about 40 metres above sea level, the Bristol Channel is only a quarter of a mile away, land rises rapidly, however , once the A39 is crossed and rises in less than two miles to Beacon Hill at over 300 metres above the sea. The area would have been dominated by pastoral farming at the time of this transcript but nowadays heavy machinery makes a mixed agricultural regime possible. The parish was a relatively large one largely as a result of incorporating over 1,000 acres of common on the northern edge of the Quantocks, the total being over 2,200 acres and supporting around 300 parishioners. In Domesday times East Quantoxhead was held by one Ralph of Reuilly and supported 9 ploughs, meadows and pasture plus a mill. |
