The ParishThe parish of Seavington St Michael, one of two small villages the other being Seavington St Mary, lies in south central Somerset. Seavington St Michael is a compact and quite substantial village lying on the former route of the A303 road about 3 miles east of the small market town of Ilminster. The A303, now dual cariageway, runs a half mile north of the village and connects Ilminster with South Petherton and is part of the London to Exeter road. Seavington St Michael is dominated by small fields and pastoral farming a state which remains from the time of this transcript. Seavington St Michael is drained eastwards by the Lopen Brook, which soon joins the River Parrett and heads northwards to reach the Bristol Channel through the port of Bridgwater. Seavington St Michael is sited at around 60 metres above the sea and sits on something of a ridge with most undulating land sitting between 30 and 70 metres. Even by Somerset standards Seavington St Michael parish was tiny, it covered fewer than 300 acres and would have supported a population of less than 200 parishioners. In Domesday times Seavington St Michael was enumerated together with St Mary and the "lost" manor of Seavington Abbotts, collectively they offered 6 ploughs, small meadows and a mill and were held by Athelney Abbey, Couny obert of Mortain and a small holding by one Siward, a falconer. |
