The ParishThe parish of Upton is located in western Somerset indeed it forms a short stretch of the border with neighbouring Devon. Upton is located around 10 miles north of the Devon market town of Tiverton on the southern edge of Exmoor. Upton sits adjacent to the B3190 road which runs from Watchet on the Somerset coast to the large village of Bampton in Devon. There is not much to Upton and judging by the volume of records in this transcript then that seems to have always applied. The area is dominated by pastoral farming, the land is rolling hills with small hedged fields, cattle being the principal stock. Upton is built in a valley where the B3190 crosses a small stream, to the west of the village the valley has been dammed to create Wimbleball Lake, Upton is sited at around 140 metres above sea level and land rises to the west steeply to top out at almost 360 metres on Haddon Hill 2 miles west of Upton. The parish has a fairly typical acreage for an upland parish, some 3,800 acres and supported just over 350 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Upton in Domesday Book. |
