The ParishThe parish of Wanstrow lies in eastern Somerset quite close to its border with neighbouring Wiltshire. Wanstrow is located about 6 miles southwest of the market town of Frome. Wanstrow is a compact small village located astride the A359 road which links Frome to Yeovil. Wanstrow is largely built around the crossroads that road forms with the lane that heads westwards to Cranmore. The agricultural regime around Wanstrow would have been largely pastoral at the time of this transcript although more arable has begun following the introduction of modern machinery. Wanstrow is built within a gently undulating landscape, local heights top 200 metres above the sea but Wanstrow is sited at around 140 metres on a rising slope. The main drainage of the parish is headed eastwards to join the River Frome, this eventually meets the Avon just west of Bradford on Avon and thence exits through the Avon Gorge into the Bristol Channel. One of the features of Wanstrow parish is the line of the East Somerset railway, a heritage line which follows the former Shepton Mallet branch line. Wanstrow parish was of a typical size for this area where parishes are quite small, it covered just over 2,000 acres and would have supported just below 450 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was shared between one Turstin (son of Rolf) and the Bishop of Wells. The parish then supported 8 ploughs as well as possessing meadows, pastures and woodland. |
