The ParishThe parish of Wiveliscombe lies in western Somerset not too far from its border with neighbouring Devon. Wiveliscombe is located about 10 miles west of the county town of Taunton. Wiveliscombe is a small and compact market town sitting at the junction of the B3227 (Taunton to Bampton) road with the B3188 which runs northwards from Wiveliscombe to Watchet. Wiveliscombe was a small market town which specialised in the local livestock, in addition there was a woollen manufacture which employed many of the the townsfolk. The hinterland of the parish would largely have been used for pastoral farming in the characteristic small fields of the area. Wiveliscombe is drained by a number of small brooks which join together to form the Hillfarrance Brook and join the River Tone just before reaching Taunton, thence to the Bristol Channel through the Parrett & the port of Bridgwater. Wiveliscombe is sited at around 110 metres above the sea, some 20 metres above the local brook level and land rises steeply to the west on to the outliers of Exmoor and local heights of over 300 metres. Wiveliscombe parish was one of the larger in the area and covered almost 5,800 acres, it would have supported a population of almost 3,000 parishioners. In Domesday time Wiveliscombe was held by the Bishop of Wells and could offer 27 ploughs, meadows, woodland and pasture plus a mill - a wealthy place even then. |
