The ParishThe parish of Caverswall lies in central northern Staffordshire about 5 miles southeast of the pottery town of Stoke Upon Trent. Caverswall sits about 1 mile north of the busy A50 road which connects Stoke through to Derby. Caverswall is a curiously oval settlement with a centre spread around an open central space and church and 13th century castle to its south. The castle, established in the reign of Edward II had a series of involvements in conflict notably being garrisoned by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War. Situated on the fore-slopes of the nearby Peak District Caverswall's economy would have been underpinned by pastoral farming, roughly 3/4 of the parish acreage would have been devoted to this activity. Caverswall is drained southeastwards by the River Blithe which joins the Trent to the east of Rugeley than makes its long way to the North Sea eventually reaching it through the Humber Estuary. Caverswall is sited at around 180 metres above the sea land is fairly hilly with local heights rising to close to 270 metres within a mile or two. North Staffordshire parishes are fairly large in extent and Caverswall was fairly typical, it covered just over 5,300 acres and would have supported a population of around 1,500 parishioners. In Domesday times Caverswall was a relatively small place offering just 4 plough and the usual small meadows and woodland to its landholder Robert of Stafford. |
