The ParishThe parish of Seighford lies in western Staffordshire about 3 miles northwest of the county town of Stafford. Seighford is a small compact village built along a north/south running lane about a miles south of the A5013 (Stafford to Eccleshall) road. In addition to Seighford village itself, the parish also contained several other smaller villages and hamlets. Seighford parish includes two significant transport routes, the main London to Liverpool railway and the M6 London to Carlisle motorway both pass through the eastern portion of the parish. Seighford sits in gently undulating countryside, the main employment would have been in farming and whilst a mixed farming regime was present arable farming predominated. Nowadays given its proximity to Stafford Seighford also offers a rural location to commuters. Seighford parish is drained by small tributaries of the River Sow, these are flowing southeastwards to eventually join the great River Trent on its long journey to England's east coast through the Humber Estuary. Seighford is sited at around 80 metres above sea level and there are no significant heights around it. Seighford parish was fairly typically sized for the area, it covered around 4,600 acres and would have supported around 900 parishioners. In Domesday times Seighford was held by the Bishop of Chester, it could only boast 5 ploughs together with small parcels of woodland and meadow making it a rather small place. |
