The ParishThe parish of Charsfield lies in the southeastern portion of central Suffolk being roughly 5 miles north of the small port of Woodbridge. Charsfield is located just north of the B1078 road which connects Needham Market with Wickham Market. Charsfield has a rather L-shaped layout with most properties lining the small tributary of the River Deben which flows through the village, whilst others line up with the church along a northward running lane. Like most Suffolk parishes Charsfield would have largely earned its living from arable farming, this is a rich soil area supported broad field of largely cereals together with beet & in more recent times the vivid yellow of oil-seed, modern maps show an extensive area of orchards to the west of the parish too. The small stream, which runs parallel to the main street, heads eastwards to meet the Deben close to Wickham Market and thence to the south to the Deben's estuary & the North Sea passing through Woodbridge. Charsfield is sited at around 20 - 30 metres above the sea with land rising away from the stream northwards in gentl terrain where local high points reach almost 60 metres close to Monewden. Measuring just under 1,300 acres Charsfield was entirely typical of parishes in this area, within that acreage would have been supported a population of around 500 parishioners. In Domesday times Charsfield was a much more significant village, its population made amongst the largest 20% recorded in that book. and no fewer than 8 landholders had a piece of the parish, collectively their assets amounted to 17 ploughs and some meadows. |
