The ParishThe parish of Clare lies in southwestern Suffolk and forms part of the border with neighbouring Essex. Clare is located roughly midway between the market town of Haverhill and Sudbury being 6 miles east of the former and 7 northwest of the latter. Clare sits on the northern banks of the River Stour which, here, forms the border between the two counties and on the A1092 road which connects Haverhill with Long Melford. Clare has a long history being a pre-Norman foundation, it grew to market town size following the construction of the Norman Castle in the late 11th century and the Augustinian Priory in the 13th. Clare's high point came in early mediaeval times growing as one of the Suffolk "Wool towns" its market flourishing as the wool trade made the merchants wealthy. Clare never grew to the size of both Sudbury & Haverhill and its mediaeval timbered buildings now provide a tourist attraction in themselves in modern times. Most of Clare is built along the upturned "Y" shape formed by the A1092, following the Stour valley, and the B1063 which runs northwards from it, the central axis being around the church. The Stour drains the parish eastwards through Sudbury to reach the North Sea through the port of Manningtree. Clare is sited at around 50 metres above the sea, in sits in a valley setting within gently rounded countryside with local heights rising to around 100 metres or so within a few miles. Despite Clare's market town status the wider parish was fairly typically sized for this area, covering around 2,200 acres it would have supported a population of around 1,700 parishioners. In Domesday times Clare was a holding of Count Gilbert's son Richard, a wealthy place and one of the largest 20% of places recorded in the book, it offered an impressive 32 ploughs, meadows & woodland as well as a mill. |
