The ParishSuffolk is the possessor of two parishes called Denham hence the suffix for Denham St John, this parish lies in northern Suffolk quite close to its border with neighbouring Norfolk and about 2 miles east of the large village of Eye from which it gains that suffix. Denham sits in lanes about 1 mile north of the B1117 road which connects Eye with nearby Stadbroke. Denham principally consists of a string of cottages and farms along a north/south running lane with no real village to speak of. This is prime arable agricultural land, a broad plateau showing few contours and almost totally devoted to growing of cereals, beet and oil seed. What little surface drainage there is is headed northwards to join the Waveney and thence the North Sea through Great Yarmouth. Denham is sited at around 50 metres above sea level and there are few contours around the parish at all. Parishes in this part of Suffolk are rather small in extent and denham is no exception being around 1,000 acres, it would have supported just under 300 parishioners. In Domesday times Denham was shared between 4 landholders including a portion held directly by the King himself. The parish could boast 8 ploughs as well as small meadows and woodlands but was not a large place having a mere 33 households. |
