The ParishThe parish of Dennington is located in northeastern Suffolk about 3 miles north of the small market town of Framlingham. Dennington is crossroads village sitting on the A1120 road (Stowmarket to the A12 at Yoxford) where it crosses the B1116 (Framlingham to Fressingfield) road. Dennington is medium sized village with properties spread along all four arms of the crossroads. Situated on rich soils Dennington would have largely earned its living from farming, in that period a more mixed farming regime of rotation would have been employed, today it is almost totally arable around the village. Dennington is drained eastwards by the headwaters of the River Alde, this makes its way to the North Sea through Snape and past Aldeburgh & Orford Ness. Dennington is sited at around 50 metres above the sea and sits on something of a plateau with local heights reaching barely 10 metres higher for many a mile. Dennington parish was one of the larger in this area, it covered almost 3,300 acres and would have supported a population of close to 1,000 parishioners. In Domesday times Dennington was a relatively small rural place, one of the many holdings of Robert Malet it could offer 13 ploughs together with meadows and woodland and a healthy array of animals. |
