The ParishThe parish of Earl Soham lies in east central Suffolk about 3 miles west of the small market town of Framlingham. Earl Soham is a rather linear village built along the former Roman Road (between Colchester & Dunwich) now the A1120 which connects Stowmarket through to the A12 at Yoxford. Earl Soham stretches for over a half mile along the A1120 and grew up where that road crosses a small tributary of the River Deben. The road brings quite a bit of passing trade enough to keep Earl Soham's businesses alive. The area would have been largely arable farmland at the time of this transcript and little has changed to modern times. Earl Soham's little stream soon joins the Deben and heads off southeastwards to reach the North Sea through that river's estuary and the port of Woodbridge. Earl Soham is sited around 40 metres above the sea and the land could best be described as gently undulating, local heights & valleys rarely more than 20 metres either side of that figure. Earl Soham parish was of a fairly typical size for this area, it covered just over 1,900 acres and would have supported a population of around 700 parishioners. In Domesday times Earl Soham was almost totally held by Count Alan of Brittany from Bury St Edmunds Abbey, small holdings were with 2 other tenants, the parish was relatively small offering 7 ploughs as well as small meadows & woodlands. |
