The ParishThe parish of Easton lies in east central Suffolk about 6 miles north of the port & market town of Woodbridge. Easton is a small and compact village lying in the valley of the River Deben, it sits in lanes about 3 miles northwest of the A12 road which connects London with Lowestoft. Much of Easton is built along a curving lane which follows a meander of the river, to the north of the village lies Easton Park the home of the prominent Wingfield family who presided over village affairs. The area would largely have been used for farming with a slightly more mixed regime applicable as the valley bottom provided better grazing than arable farmland. The Deben drains the parish southeast and south to reach the North Sea through the estuary and port of Woodbridge. Easton is sited at around 20 metres above the sea but land rises only gently to local heights around 40 metres. Easton parish was small, like most in this area, it covered just over 1,400 acres and would have supported a population of just under 400 parishioners. In Domesday times Easton was a small place indeed, despite being shared between Robert Malet & Roger of Poitou its assets were too small to be detailed beyond the presence of a pair of "free men". |
