The ParishThe town of Ipswich, capital of Suffolk, lies in southeastern Suffolk close to its North Sea coast. The town lies on the River Orwell and was a thriving port. The parish of St Helen sits in northeastern squeezed between its two larger neighbour of St Margaret & St Clement. Ipswich was made up of a number of parishes each with its own small area of the city St Helen was one of the smaller parishes covering a rough oblong to the northeast of the immediate town centre. Collectively Ipswich supported over 25,000 parishioners but St Helen's parish held around 900. The parish is sited around 15 metres above sea level. St Helen's street, the main artery of the parish is formed largely of terraced housing and small shops & businesses, a typical outer urban area. Ipswich has a long history and has extensive reference in Domesday Book where it is recorded as Gippeswyc from a tributary of the the Orwell. |
