The ParishThe parish of Norton lies in north central Suffolk about 7 miles east of Bury St Edmunds. Norton sits on A1088 road which connects Ixworth through to the busy A14 road. Norton is rather s linear village with most properties built along either side of the A1088 with other concentrations on the eastward running lane. A typical Suffolk farming village with arable farming dominating the local economy, today little has changed in the local landuse. Modern developments have encroached, the Ipswich to Cambridge rail line passing through the southern portion of the parish but Norton does not have a station. The Black Bourn (which gives its name to the local "hundred") drains the parish northwards reaching the Little Ouse at the Norfolk border thence through the Fens to reach the North Sea through The Wash. Norton is sited at around 40 metres above the sea in gentle terrain, away from the shallow valley of the Black Bourn land rises gently eastwards to local heights of close to 70 metres. Norton parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering close to 2,400 acres it would have supported a population of around 850 parishioners. In Domesday times Norton was a property of the King, a prosperous rural settlement offering 17 ploughs as well as the usual meadows & woodland. |
