The ParishThe parish of Rumburgh lies in northeastern Suffolk about 4 miles south of the market town of Bungay and 4 miles northwest of the market town of Halesworth. Rumburgh lies in a network of lanes that lie about 2 miles west of the A144 road which links those two Suffolk towns. Rumburgh sits on a broad, flat agricultural plain with little variation in height for many miles. This is arable country "par excellence" with vast cereal fields resembling the Great Plains of the USA. The area was also excellent for the placement of airfields and in World War II the many airfields which dot the area helped to defend England. The plain sits at a height of approximately 50 metres above sea-level and what little drainage there is consists only of narrow brooks and ditches draining into, ultimately, the River Waveney to the north. The parish is small, as are many in this area, almost 1,400 acres but supporting over 400 parishioners. The parish is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book but there was history here, a monastery was founded here by Benedictines in the 11th century and flourished until Henry VIII's dissolution. |
