The ParishThe parish of Great saxham lies in central western Suffolk about 5 miles west of the market town of Bury St Edmunds. Great Saxham sits within an area devoid of significant numbered roads, the closest such road to Great Saxham being the busy A14 road which connects the East Coast ports though to the main motorway network and which lies a little under 3 miles to the north. There is not much to Great Saxham, no village as such, indeed it is suspected that the parish was a "closed parish" with most land held by a single landowner discouraging inbound migration and leading to a parish dominated by the estate of Great Saxham Hall, a house designed by the famous architect, Robert Adam. Today besides the hall's estate the parish has a few farms and cottages astride a straggling narrow lane. Like most of Suffolk's parishes Great Saxham was dominated by arable farming, cereals, beet and oil-seed now dominate. A small tributary of the River Lark drains the parish northwards to join that river which heads off westwards through the Fens joining with the Great Ouse to reach the North Sea through The Wash. Great Saxham is sited at around 80 metres above the sea, something of a local high point within this more undulating area of the county. Suffolk parishes are often small in extent and Great Saxham was one of them, covering a little over 1,400 acres it would have supported a population of around 250 parishioners. In Domesday times Great Saxham was recorded combined with Little Saxham, it is difficult to determine which of the 3 landholders held which portion but collectively King William, Bury St Edmunds Abbey & Count Gilbert's son Richard held 15 ploughs, meadows & woodland and a half share in a mill. |
