The ParishThe parish of Stowupland lies in central Suffolk roughly 2 miles northeast of the large market town of Stowmarket. Stowupland sits around a mile east of the busy A14 road which connects the port of Felixstowe through to The Midlands and the motorway network. Stowupland has grown markedly in modern times from being merely a large village, always subservient to its larger neighbour, into a major suburb serving not only Stowmarket but also, thanks to its transport links, Ipswich. Virtually all of Stowupland's properties either line the meandering A1120 road from Stowmarket to Yoxford or sit to its north. Like most Suffolk parishes Stowupland would have been a farming village with arable being the predominant land-use, something which still remains so today. Stowupland is drained by a small tributary of the River Gippin which is soon joined, the Gippin heads south to reach the North Sea through the county town of Ipswich. Stowupland is sited at around 60 metres above the sea on a broad plateau which is at that height or similar for many miles. Suffolk has many small parishes, Stowupland was towards the larger end of the scale, covering close to 2,900 acres it would have supported a population of close to 900 parishioners. Stowupland is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book being subservient to its larger neighbour, |
