The ParishThe parish of Stradishall lies in western Suffolk quite close to its border with neighbouring Cambridgeshire and also not far from Essex. Stradishall is located about 6 miles northeast of the market town of Haverhill. Stradishall is a crossroads settlement formed where the A143 road from Haverhill to Bury St Edmunds crosses the B1063 which runs from Newmarket to Clare. The village has grown southwards along the B1063 over the centuries. The area is rich agricultural (arable) land in the gently rolling lands of western Suffolk. The parish is drained by the headwaters of the River Glem, this heads eastwards to join the Stour just west of Long Melford from there heads for the North Sea. Stradishall is sited at around 80 metres above the sea and it sits on a gentle valley bottom with land rising 30 metres to both north and south. The parish was of a fairly typical size for western Suffolk, it covered almost 1,400 acres and would have supported around 380 parishioners. In Domesday times Stradishall, held by on Richard son of Count Gilbert, was a small place indeed just 3 ploughs and a small meadow are listed as assets. |
