The ParishThe parish of Ashtead lies in central Surrey about 2 miles northeast of the market town of Leatherhead. The village is sited along the A24 road which links Leatherhead with Epsom, the village has grown substantially in the 20th century into an almost continuously built up commuter settlement and is only separated from Epsom by a small green belt of forest. The south of the parish marks the course of London's orbital motorway the M25. Ashtead is sited on rising ground about 70 metres above sea-level as the land rises towards the North Downs, the land rises to almost 140 metres above sea-level to the southeast on Epsom Downs, home of the famous horse race course. Ashtead would have been sited in a landscape of mixed woodland and agricultural land, however, the land is rather poor with sandy soils so there would also have been much pasture. The parish was extensive, in excess of 2,500 acres and supported just over 600 parishioners. In Domesday Book Ashtead was held from the Bishop of Bayeux and supported no fewer than 16 ploughs. |
