The ParishThe parish of Chaldon lies in southeastern Surrey not too far from its border with neighbouring Kent. Chaldon is located about 5 miles northeast of the market town of Reigate and sits on the B2031 which connects Reigate with Caterham. Chaldon is a rather scattered settlement with no easily defined centre but spread over a broad area of the North Downs amidst rolling rural scenery scarcely imaginable so close to London. This rural peace is notable as only a mile or two away is the intersection of the modern M25 & M23 motorways. Much of the economic activity, at the time of this transcript, would have been involved in arable farming and allied trades. Sitting, as it does, on the chalk of the North Downs Chaldon has little drainage but a series of dry valley head northwards towards the urban River Wandle which reaches the Thames at Wandsworth and thence to the North Sea through the Thames Estuary. Chaldon is sited at around 180 metres above sea level and almost sits on the crest of the North Downs escarpment which rises nearby to around 230 metres before falling away into the Weald, land falls steadily in rolling chalk downlands to Chaldon's north. Chaldon parish was rather small even by Surrey standards, it covered just over 1,600 acres and would have supported a population of around 200 parishioners. In Domesday times Chaldon was even smaller, it was held by one Bishop Odo of Bayeux and could offer just 2 ploughs. |
