The ParishThe parish of East Clandon lies in western central Surrey about 4 miles east of the town of Guildford. East Clandon is a small and compact village with most properties sitting just north of the A246 road which connect Guildford with Leatherhead. East Clandon is one of a string of villages built at the northern base of the North Downs chalk ridge, the parish being slightly elongated in a north to south direction to take in both the downland of the chalk and the thicker soils of the vale. Farming would have predominated in the local economy, albeit much of the parish was set to managed copses. The parishes proximity to the capital has led to some expansion but not to the degree of its western neighbour which acquired a rail link. East Clandon is drained northwards by a small tributary of the River Wey, the latter making its way to the Thames at Weybridge and thence through the capital to the North Sea. East Clandon is sited at around 90 metres above the sea, land rises steeply to the south onto the North Downs and local heights reach just over 200 metres within a couple of miles. Small by Surrey standards, East Clandon parish covered a little over 1,400 acres supporting a population of just under 300 parishioners. In Domesday times East Clandon was shared between Chertsey Abbey and the ubiquitous Bishop Odo of Bayeux, it was a small place offering 8 ploughs and some woodland. |
