The ParishThe parish of Hooe lies in the southern part of East Sussex close to the coast of the English Channel. Hooe lies about 3 miles northeast of the seaside resort of Bexhill with most of its buildings alongside or close to the B2095 road which links the Eastbourne to Bexhill road with the famous 1066 battle site at Battle. Hooe is built on a distinct ridge above low lying watermeadows and pastures. The neck of land, which rises to almost 40 metres above sea level is almost cut by channels all around with the sole exception of the route followed by the B2095. From its ridge Hooe has commanding views down to the English Channel coast. The parish was quite compact and a fairly typical size for a southern parish at around 2,500 acres, it supported just over 500 parishioners. The mixture of land types from arable on the ridge to the extensive grazing on the low lying marshy ground was a wealthy mixture. As you would expect all the drainage is headed southwards towards the nearby Channel where it exits through controlling sluices at Norman's Bay (a reference to William the Conqueror, of course). In Domesday times Hooe was a wealthy parish and held by many persons, in particular the Abbey of Battle and the Count of Eu. The parish supported an impressive 40 ploughs as well as a mill and 30 salt houses. |
