The Parish{Parish Description}The parish of Keymer lies in southern central Sussex at the foot of the South Downs and about 3 miles south of the expanded new town of Burgess Hill. Keymer is one of a number of springline settlements formed at the base of the chalk escarpment which fronts the South Downs, they sit where the clay butts up to the chalk and all of the parishes are elongated north to south to grant the parish a portion of each land type. Keymer is a large village sitting on the B2116 road which follows this east/west route from Hurstpierpoint to Lewes. Because of the differing land types within the parish there would have been a diverse agricultural base, from sheep on the chalk downs to cattle on the stiff clays of the Weald, with some arable farming thrown in. In addition the clays proved to be excellent material for potters and tile makers so these trades added to local employment. The parish is drained by many small brooks which head northwestwards to join the River Adur, this turns back southwards again to reach the English Channel, through a gap in the chalk ridge, at Shoreham by Sea. Keymer stands at around 50 metres above the sea but land rises dramatically to the south to reach local heights of almost 250 metres on Ditchling Beacon. Keymer parish was of a typical size for this county, it covered just over 1,400 acres and supported a population of around 1,300 parishioners. In Domesday times Keymer was held by one William of Vatteville and could boast 19 ploughs, 2 mills and meadows. |
