Lullington The Good Shepherd

The Parish

The parish of Lullington lies in southern Sussex roughly 8 miles southeast of the market town of Lewes. Lullington sits about 2 miles south of the A27 road which links Lewes with Polegate and onwards by the A2270 to Eastbourne. Lullington is a tiny place, little more than a couple of farms and the church standing on a lane which parallels the Cuckmere River on its eastern banks and opposite the more substantial village of Alfriston. Sitting on the edges of the chalk down that holds the famous chalk figure of the Wilmington Long Man the parish is traversed by one part of the South Downs Way National Trail and is a popular local hike. The area is devoted to sheep grazing the short and sweet turf of the Downs. Lullington is drained southwards by the Cuckmere River which soon meets the English Channel at Cuckmere Haven where there are views of the Seven Sisters towards Eastbourne. Lullington is sited at between 10 and 40 metres above the sea but the chalk down to its east rises abruptly to summit above the Long Man at 214 metres with extensive views to the north over The Weald. Lullington parish was quire small covering just under 1,200 acres and supported fewer than 50 parishioners. Lullington is not mentioned in Domesday Book.

The Church

The church of the Good Shepherd sits on the western side of the lane which heads from Litlington to Wilmington and is tucked away behind a farm. Believed to be the smallest church in Sussex it is barely 18 feet square and is no more than the chancel of a former much larger church. Whilst a very picturesque building dating it is more of a challenge and Pevsner ventures it to be 14th century although its weatherboarded top seems more modern. The church is signed from the lane (Chapel Hill) by a red sign and a footpath marker, the path winds around the farmstead to the church which stands in the southeastern corner of the churchyard meaning only a few aspects are available for the photographer.
