The ParishThe parish of Tangmere lies in southwestern Sussex close to its English Channel coastline. Tangmere is a small, and much expanded recently, village sitting about 3 miles east of the city of Chichester. Tangmere lies just to the south of the busy A27 road which connects Chichester with Arundel. At the time of this transcript Tangmere would have been a small farming community, a mixed farming regime in place on the fertile lowlands bordering the English Channel. Tangmere served a vital role as an RAF base in the Second World War, the station and runways lying to the southeast of the village. Modern developments have spread the village up to the A27. Tangmere is drained southwards by numerous field drains and ditches all heading for the Aldingbourne Rife and the English Channel just east of Bognor Regis. Tangmere is sited at just 15 metres above the sea and the land about is a largely flat plain which lies between the South Downs and the Channel. Tangmere parish was small even by the average for this plain, at just over 700 acres it supported a population of around 200 parishioners. In Domesday times Tangmere was held by the Archbishop of Canterbury and could offer a mere 6 ploughs although St Andrew was in existence and mentioned. |
