The ParishThe parish of East Wittering lies in the extreme southwest of Sussex forming a stretch of the county's English Channel coastline. East Wittering is located roughly 6 miles southwest of the city of Chichester and sits at the end of the B2198 which, together with the A286 links it with the city. East Wittering is a much changed place, expanded significantly following the Victorian enthusiasm for sea-bathing. Old maps reveal a small village clustered around today's Royal Oak Inn which an extension to the coastline and a further cluster gathered around the village's church a half-mile inland. Today East Wittering is something of a mixture of bungalows, chalets and caravans stretching along the coast for almost 2 miles. At the time of this transcript East Wittering would have been a simple farming community exploiting the grazing marshes for cattle with cereals on drier land. As a coastal community numerous small drains take water to the nearby English Channel. All of the properties in East Wittering sit below 5 metres above the sea and that height is only marginally exceeded for many miles across a flat landscape. Ar just 1,000 acres East Wittering parish was towards the smaller end of the Sussex' scale that acreage supporting a population of around 250 parishioners. In Domesday times East Wittering was a holding of the Bishop of Chichester offering 8 ploughs, pastures and a mill as typical rural settlement assets. |
