The ParishThe parish of Cubbington is located almost centrally within the county of Warwickshire. Cubbington sits a little over 2 miles northeast of the town of Leamington Spa and sits on the B4453 road which connects Leamington Spa through to Rugby. Once a distinct and middling sized village, in recent times expansion of Leamington has almost joined it as a suburb with modern developments expanding northeast along the ridge of land formed between the course of the Rivers Avon & Leam. Cubbington, at one time, sat on one of the principal droving routes transporting cattle from Wales to the capital, the lane between Cubbington & Offchurch bearing the name "Welsh Road". The area of the parish encompasses rather rich arable farmland and this was the mainstay of the local economy. The Leam forms the southern boundary of the parish and this drains westwards to shortly meet the Avon, the combined flow meets the Severn and then the Bristol Channel. Cubbington is sited at around 90 metres above the sea, the ridge forms something of the highest ground hereabouts rising a mere 10 metres higher further to the northeast. Cubbington parish was fairly typically sized for its area, covering almost 1,900 acres it would have supported just under 850 parishioners. In Domesday times Cubbington was shared almost equally between Coventry Abbey, the Count of Meulan and Roger D'Ivry, collectively their combined shares only amounted to a rather small place offering 5 ploughs and some small meadows. |
