The ParishThe parish of Boscombe lies in the extreme east of Wiltshire indeed it forms part of the border with neighbouring Hampshire. Boscombe is located about 3 miles southeast of the market town of Amesbury adjacent to the A338 road which links Salisbury to the major A303 route to London. Boscombe lies offset from the main road along narrow lanes heading northwestwards from that road. It's a small village but notably compact and grouped around its church. The village is located on the edge of the flood plain of the River Bourne which flows southwestwards to join the Avon at Salisbury. The A338 road makes good use of this valley for much of its way. The village is set up a shallow dry valley of the Bourne with downlands rising behind the upper part of the village to Boscombe Down where there sits a large airfield. Boscombe, in its valley site, is about 75 metres above sea level whereas the downs rise to almost 120 metres. The parish is small, narrow and encompasses both parts of the downland and also the river valley thus ensuring an equitable mix of land use for the residents. The parish was always lightly populated supporting just over 150 parishioners. In Domesday times the land was held jointly by Amesbury church and by William of Eu, the parish supported 4 ploughs as well as meadows and pastures. |
