The ParishThe parish of Easton Royal lies in eastern Wiltshire about 3 miles east of the small market town of Pewsey. Easton Royal is a long strip of a village which lies and mainly south of the B3087 road which connects Pewsey through to the A338 at Burbage. Easton Royal sits on a shelf of land below the high chalk down-lands to its south, a shelf that was followed, further north, by the Kennet & Avon Canal in crossing over the watershed between its two rivers. Easton Royal came to some prominence in the 13th century when a Trinitarian friary was sited here serving poor travellers, the friary and its church were demolished following the dissolution of Henry VIII and Easton Royal sank back to becoming a normal farming village. The area had a mixed farming regime with sheep on the chalk highlands and arable in the lower portions, today much is arable with vast fields of cereals and oil seed. Easton Royal is drained westwards by the Deane Water which soon joins the infant Avon making its way through Bath & Bristol to the Bristol Channel through the famous gorge. Easton Royal is sited at around 140 metres above the sea and land rises to the high downs to the south, reaching 238 metres on nearby Milton Hill Clump. Wiltshire's chalk-lands parishes are often fairly extensive but Easton Royal parish was more typical of a lowland one, covering 2,200 acres it would have supported a population of close to 550 parishioners. Easton Royal is not specifically mentioned in Domesday Book. |
