The ParishThe parish of Sutton Benger lies in northwestern Wiltshire about 4 miles northeast of the market town of Chippenham. Sutton Benger is quite a large compact village built largely along the B4069 road which links Chippenham with Lyneham. The village spreads for over a half mile along the B road from its junction with the lane to Upper Seagry. The area would largely have been devoted to pastoral farming at the time of this transcript, the landscape being the southern edges of the declining Cotswold Hills. The River Avon runs through the eastern portion of the parish, this is the famous Avon that enters the Bristol Channel through the gorge and suspension bridge at Clifton. Sutton Benger sits at roughly 60 metres above sea level, although land rises to both north and west to over 90 metres. The parish is characterised by small grassy fields with fencing and stone walls. By Wiltshire standards Sutton Benger parish was on the small size, it covered just under 1,200 acres yet supported a population of just over 500 parishioners. There is no specific mention of Sutton Benger in Domesday Book. |
